NewPower Energy’s latest solar project strengthens Waikato energy resilience
NewPower Energy opened its latest solar project, Taiohi Solar Farm, at Rangiriri in the Northern Waikato – marking a significant milestone for renewable energy development in the region and a major contribution to strengthening long-term energy resilience in the Waikato.
At 30 MWp, Taiohi is NewPower’s largest solar project and a flagship investment that adds meaningful new renewable generation capacity at a time of growing demand for secure, low‑emissions energy across Aotearoa New Zealand. NewPower Energy is a subsidiary of WEL Networks.
The opening ceremony was led by Maurea Marae as mana whenua, with whom NewPower have a kawenata agreement that spans the life of the solar farm. This underpins a long‑term relationship to help deliver enduring educational outcomes and opportunities for future generations through scholarships and community‑focused initiatives.
Beyond generation capacity, Taiohi reflects a wider commitment by NewPower Energy to regional partnership, fostering enduring relations with iwi and transitioning to a more resilient and sustainable energy system for the Waikato region.
Sherson Willis was pleased to support NewPower for Taiohi’s opening providing strategic counsel and tailored engagement support to help bring together key stakeholders to mark this important achievement.
